THE WATER'S DEAD

I haven't been this addicted to a book where I couldnt put it down in a while. I stayed up all too late to finish this as I just couldn't put it down. The plot was clever and fast-paced following our team of NZ detectives on a hunt for not only a killer of a maori girl but also a little girl lily who needs her insulin to survive. There is just the right amount of tension and plot twists along with character development.

Better Left Dead by Catherine Lea - Pbk $36.99
In contrast to the beautiful landscape of the far north, this kiwi cop procedural set in and around Whangarei, takes place over a week of driving rain. The mud and the smell of decay is almost palpable as a body is discovered two weeks after being brutally murdered. Tough and tender D I Nyree Bradshaw is good at delegating tasks, but must keep score of where each of her four-strong team are at any one time. The one time she forgets... A complicated plot, cleverly edited into bite sized chapters, involving a corrupt adjudicatory, a paedophile ring, and a gang shifting methamphetamine. Into this Nyree must also meet and qualify as a person fit to become guardian of her eight-year-old granddaughter. The author makes a real effort to describe the Northland setting; poverty and its attendant problems – drugs, gangs, and mental health all get a mention. This is the second outing for D I Nyree Bradshaw and what a welcome alternative she is to the standard-issue damaged cop usually found in this genre. Long may she continue. Michael (Guest Reviewer)
